No need to
travel to the Indiana State Library, you can attend from the comfort of your
own library!
After meeting as part of the first
cohort in the American Library Association’s Libraries Transforming Communities
initiative, three librarians from three different sized library systems will
share their experience getting out of the library and engaging with their
communities. By the end of the session, attendees will understand why
libraries should adopt this type of work, learn strategies for how to do it,
and leave with techniques to make community engagement part of their regular
library routine.
Presenters: Jean Canosa Albano is the Assistant Director for Public Services at the Springfield City Library. Her joy is to make connections between people and the information they seek in order to learn and grow. She is a graduate of University of Massachusetts, Amherst (BA, Spanish), University of Rhode Island (MLIS, Library & Information Services), and LIPPI: the Leadership Institute for Political and Public Impact, a program of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts. Her community involvement includes the Board of Directors of HCS Head Start, the Board of Directors of Art for the Soul Gallery, the Executive Board of the New England Library Association/Senior Director, Home*City*Families Advisory Committee, Springfield Early Literacy Coalition founder, State Advisory Committee on Libraries chair, the League of Women Voters, and Greater Springfield Senior Services grant review taskforce. She was recently named a BusinessWest Woman of Impact for her commitment to connecting the community to the library.
Erica Freudenberger is a promiscuous collaborator who has been working with libraries to create community-led change for more than a decade. Currently the Outreach & Engagement Consultant at the Southern Adirondack Library System, she formerly led the Red Hook Public Library, a finalist for Library Journal’s “Best Small Library Award,” garnering five-star library ratings from 2013-2016. She took part in the Re-envisioning Public Libraries pilot with the Aspen Institute, and was part of the first cohort in the American Library Association’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative. She is a 2016 Library Journal Mover & Shaker.
Aileen Luppert is the Managing Librarian of one of the largest branches of the Spokane County Library District in Spokane, Washington. From 2013-2016, under her supervision, SCLD was the only library system in Washington, and one of a few in the country, to train and certify staff as Navigators to assist patrons signing up for health insurance. She is on the leadership team for two local coalitions focused on resources for families and individuals in need. Aileen has presented to state and national library associations on topics ranging from jobseeker support in libraries, community engagement, and serving patrons experiencing homelessness.
