Develop, Discover, & Discuss: GPO and the FDLP

The session will be held at Indiana State Library (315 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202).  

This one day workshop, hosted by the Indiana State Library, is designed to help librarians manage and promote their federal documents collection. Librarians from the Government Publishing Office (GPO) will be on hand to provide training for librarians interested in learning how to manage, promote, and utilize GPO content. Federal documents librarians, or any interested librarians, are encourage to register for this free one day workshop with GPO. LEUs are available for this training.  Please email Brent Abercrombie (babercrombie@library.in.gov) if you need an LEU certificate. Registration is required.

Training Sessions:


FDLP Collection Management (Length: 1-2 hours):  The library’s current collection development practices will be reviewed with the Outreach Librarian.  Discussion of making tangible and online collections will be reviewed and suggestions will be made by GPO. Weeding requirements will also be addressed. In advance of the training, GPO staff will attempt to identify any state or region-specific practices that are in place in your locality. Weeding a depository collection (Length: 1 hour): Optional regional depository coordinator attendance. Libraries facing a major weeding project or who are interested in maintaining a well-tailored collection in print format will be interested in learning how to weed their FDLP materials. Weeding requirements will be addressed as will tips and tricks. In advance of the training, GPO staff will attempt to identify any state or region-specific practices that are in place in your locality. [Room 401] - 1 LEU

 

Depository Marketing and Promotion (Length: 30 minutes): During this session, GPO Outreach Librarian and library staff will review the library’s promotion of depository resources and brainstorm alternative promotion methods. [Room 401]

 

****BREAK FOR LUNCH****  Attendees are on their own for lunch and are welcome to visit downtown Indy's lunch destinations

 

Govinfo.gov (Length: 30 minutes): govinfo is GPO's beta website that will eventually replace the Federal Digital System (FDsys) public website. This site provides free online access to official publications from all three branches of the Federal Government and allows you to: search, browse, download, and access metadata for documents and publications. Following the completion of the training, attendees will participate in a Govinfo.gov usability testing (Length: 60 minute). [Room 428] 


Question and Answer Session:  This period of time allows library administration and staff to ask any questions that they may have about GPO, the FDLP, Rules and Regulations of the program, or anything else.  Expect a lively conversation between GPO representatives and library staff.  Let us know how we can help you!
